Pensioners whose weekly income is below £218.15 (single person) or £332.95 (a couple) should check to see if they could be eligible for pension credit. Being in receipt of this credit would also entitle the pensioner to support with housing costs, the TV licence, council tax and the winter fuel payment worth up to £300.
There are currently around 880,000 low-income pensioner households that would be eligible for pension credit, but are not claiming it – many believing they’re not entitled, have too much in savings, or don’t like to accept handouts.
