From 1st October 2024, the average cost of annual energy bills for households in England, Scotland and Wales, on a standard price-capped tariff, will increase by 10%. (Please note that the percentage increase that you actually pay depends on where you live and how much energy you use). This new Energy Price Cap will be in place until 1st January 2025, after which analysts predict that energy prices will increase again by 3%.
This comes on the back of the government’s disappointing decision to stop winter fuel payments for around 10 million pensioners in England and Wales. However, it is important to stress that those pensioners eligible for pension credit or other means-tested benefits will still be entitled to the winter fuel payment. This is why it’s vital to check whether you are eligible to claim pension credit, worth an average of £3,900 per year.
The Household Support Fund has also been extended until March 2025. Pensioners, and others struggling with the cost of living over the colder months should contat their local council to see what support may be available. You can also contact GMMAP and we will discuss all your options. Getting in touch is easy. You can find your local office or fill in the contact form.
